The Opsera is a statistic RealGM's Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine a team's Opsera, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract the team's ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through Thursday, May 26th's games: Last week's ranking is in parenthesizes 1. (1) St. Louis Cardinals 4.41 2. (2) New York Yankees 4.19 The Yankees have won a few games with small ball as of late, but they still lead the majors in home runs by nearly 20 dingers. T3. (3) Cleveland Indians 3.92 -- (4) Atlanta Braves 3.92 5. (5) Oakland Athletics 3.63 The As still have one of the best pitching staffs in the league statistically despite all their injuries, but their bats havent done much of anything. Below are the final rankings through Thursday, May 12th's games: Last week's ranking is in parenthesizes 1. (1) St. Louis Cardinals - 4.52 The Cardinals are in first yet again, but they did lose .07 points off their Opsera, in part because of an ugly 11-4 loss to the Cubs on Wednesday. With a trip to Cincinnati and a series against Philadelphia coming up, they might finally relinquish the top spot. 2. (5) New York Yankees - 4.22 They have lost six of their last nine games, but they moved up three spots thanks to close losses. Their OPS will remain among the best, but their team ERA is bound to slide due to questions in the rotation. 3. (4) Philadelphia Phillies - 4.12 Roy Halladay and Co. are approaching baseball's best ERA and they lead all teams in wins, complete games, quality starts and fewest walks. 4. (3) Los Angeles Angels - 4.07 They ranked seventh in OPS, but losing Kendrys Morales for the entire season is going to hurt. I saw Mark Trumbo hit a ball out of Fenway Park last week, but he has an OBP of just .303. 5. (2) Cleveland Indians - 4.03 Don't look now, but the Indians are starting to come back down to earth. They have just three wins in their last eight games. 6. (6) Atlanta Braves - 4.00 If their offense continues to be below-average, the Braves could add a bat before the July 31 trade deadline and become a serious threat to the Phillies in the National League East. 7. (10) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.94 The Rays are in first place and winning 71% of the time since they began the season with six losses. 8. (9) Florida Marlins - 3.79 Imagine where the Marlins would be if Hanley Ramirez wasn't hitting .217/.308/.302 with just seven extra-base hits. 9. (7) Oakland Athletics - 3.78 They have lost Dallas Braden to injury, but the Athletics still have four starting pitchers with sub-3.30 ERAs. 10. (8) Texas Rangers - 3.56 The Rangers would be in trouble if they had traded Michael Young, who leads them with a .349 batting average, 3.84 on-base percentage and 51 hits. If Colby Lewis and Derek Holland figure things out on the mound, the division is still theirs to lose. 11. (16) San Francisco Giants - 3.54 12. (T12) Kansas City Royals - 3.40 13. (17) Cincinnati Reds - 3.32 14. (14) San Diego Padres - 3.25 15. (11) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.18 16. (T12) Colorado Rockies - 3.16 17. (18) New York Mets - 3.09 18. (15) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.03 19. (23) Detroit Tigers - 3.01 20. (T20) Pittsburgh Pirates - 2.94 21. (T20) Boston Red Sox - 2.93 22. (19) Arizona Diamondbacks - 2.91 23. (27) Chicago White Sox - 2.86 24. (26) Los Angeles Dodgers - 2.71 25. (22) Washington Nationals - 2.63 26. (25) Chicago Cubs - 2.62 27. (24) Seattle Mariners - 2.45 28. (28) Baltimore Orioles - 2.30 29. (29) Houston Astros - 1.93 30. (30) Minnesota Twins - 1.31

Below are the final rankings through Thursday, May 5th’s games: Last week's ranking is in parenthesizes 1. (1) St. Louis Cardinals – 4.59 The Cardinals have been boosted by Matt Holliday (.417) and Lance Berkman (.392), who have the two highest batting averages in all of baseball. The pitching of Kyle Lohse – 4-1 with a 2.44 ERA – helped as well. 2. (3) Cleveland Indians – 4.37 The Indians are still red-hot, actually jumping a stop from last week’s ranking. Only three teams have scored more runs than Cleveland this season. 3. (4) Los Angeles Angels – 4.29 Jered Weaver finally suffered his first loss of the season against the Red Sox this week, but he’s still 6-1 with 55 strikeouts and a 1.39 ERA. Howie Kendrick has been instrumental as well. He’s hitting .305 with six home runs and 14 RBI. 4. (9) Philadelphia Phillies – 4.25 Pitching is the name of the game, but Placido Polando has unexpectedly bolstered the offense. The infielder has 21 RBI and a .418 OBP. 5. (2) New York Yankees – 4.17 A trio of Yankees – Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano – have eight home runs (only four Major League players have more), but there have been times when the offense has been shut down. New York scored just 10 runs in a four-game series against Detroit this week. 6. (10) Atlanta Braves – 4.02 Despite some off-field drama, the Braves won five straight heading into Friday night’s game against the Phillies. 7. (8) Oakland Athletics – 3.93 It’s still all pitching for the Athletics, who could slide up in these rankings if they make a play for a hitter prior to July’s trade deadline. They have had the lowest ERA (2.66) in all of baseball for a majority of the season. 8. (T6) Texas Rangers – 3.85 Where would the Rangers be if Neftali Feliz, Nelson Cruz and Josh Hamilton weren’t injured? 9. (5) Florida Marlins – 3.74 Josh Johnson has just three victories despite a sparkling 1.68 ERA. Florida has scored 17 runs in his wins (three games) and 17 in his loss and no-decisions (four games). 10. (11) Tampa Bay Rays – 3.55 On April 10, the Rays were 1-8. Since then they have gone 16-6 and five of those six losses have come by three or fewer runs. 11. (12) Toronto Blue Jays – 3.43 12. (22) Kansas City Royals – 3.40 -- (13) Colorado Rockies – 3.40 14. (16) San Diego Padres – 3.29 15. (T6) Milwaukee Brewers – 3.25 16. (15) San Francisco Giants – 3.12 17. (14) Cincinnati Reds – 3.04 18. (18) New York Mets – 2.88 19. (20) Arizona Diamondbacks – 2.85 20. (19) Boston Red Sox – 2.81 -- (21) Pittsburgh Pirates – 2.81 22. (17) Washington Nationals – 2.80 23. (25) Detroit Tigers – 2.66 24. (24) Seattle Mariners – 2.61 25. (27) Chicago Cubs – 2.60 26. (23) Los Angeles Dodgers – 2.51 27. (26) Chicago White Sox – 2.41 28. (28) Baltimore Orioles – 2.11 29. (29) Houston Astros – 2.08 30. (30) Minnesota Twins – 1.42

Indians Have Best April In Franchise History

Jun 25, 2014 4:29 AM

Orlando Cabrera drove the first pitch he saw in the 13th inning for an RBI single, sending the Indians to their 12th straight home victory, 3-2 over the Tigers on Saturday night. The Indians have been even quicker to strike in the AL Central. Their fifth win in a row finished off the best April record in franchise history at 18-8. "An outstanding April," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "Now we'll see what May brings. This is behind us."
